and...number 3!

Last one of the day for now (no sound yet with this one either).
I am loving this white mask and black lipstick - very ghost/corpse-like. Expect more.

  1. Caitlin, truly a haunting image - the effect of the mask.
There are two projects you need to know about. First is Samuel Beckett's "Not I", a play where the stage and the actress are completely blacked out, except her mouth, which is spotlighted. Here is a video of part of it (the original I think is 20 min long - you can google the script)with commentary by the actress who worked with Beckett directly on the production while he was still alive.

The second is a 30 minute video by Hannah Wilke. I can only find a segment of it online, but the full version was on display at the MOMA in their permanent collection when we visited. Here's a clip

I liked not knowing what you were saying. When I watched the first one, at the end I wondered if you were singing 'happy birthday'. It made me watch it again, and seeing it the second time after having made that connection, and seeing the anger in your delivery was very powerful. I think I would have figured out the counting as well, but having been told it up front made it hard for me to experience. Lesson: let the viewer figure it out.
The veil itself is loaded with connotations (separation/isolation, and its opposite - the bride's veil - the moment before connecting with another for life).
Q: is there a reason the veil is a hood and stops at the neck? does the uncovered skin play a role?
Think about how you would ideally like these to be seen for the final crit, and let's prepare for that by doing a trial run next weekend. Let me know what you will need.
    Best,
    Jennie

    1. I agree about letting the viewer figure it out. It's something I like to do with my work when it is seen in public. I guess I just made the mistake of assuming that since I'm posting on a blog, I should explain it. Lesson learned.
Now I am not sure if I should answer your question about the veil or not...tricky...perhaps it will wait until Saturday. I have my own reasons, but I think it will be good to know what other people think before I explain it away.
I got your email about being in 235 Wilson. Great! I think I will just need 2 smart carts which I can pick up before crits start. I like having simultaneous videos.
      Thanks for the video links!

  2. Totally freaky...if you plan to play this at the critique on a big wall, I may wet my pants. :) In all seriousness...I think you'll get a strong reaction from people when they see these. It would be interesting to experiement with the audience, with and without sound. See what the different reactions are.
